About EHN.org and DailyClimate.org

Journalism that drives the discussion

We are a publication of Environmental Health Sciences, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to driving science into public discussion and policy on environmental health issues, including climate change.

The EHN.org and Daily Climate newsrooms are editorially independent of Environmental Health Sciences.

We are reader- and foundation-funded organization that reports, publishes and curates journalism on environmental topics.

We've been at this since 2002 and have published EHN.org continuously since Aug. 2, 2003.

Why do we publish news you don't like?

Airport travelers

We get this question a lot.

We review and curate hundreds of stories and opinion pieces on vital issues every week involving health, pollution, nature, energy and more. Passions run high on these topics, and both science and politics can be contentious.

We have a high opinion of our readership; we don't believe that you need to be protected from exposure to news perspectives or opinions with which you may strongly disagree. Our assumption is that we do our job best by showing you a broad sampling of what's being written and reported on the topics we all care about. You may not like everything we post. But as journalists, we're committed to showing you the whole picture.

Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

EHS and its newsrooms bring an equity-rooted focus to its work contextualizing science, improving our health, and making our environment safer and more sustainable for all.

Please visit the Environmental Health Science website to see our organization's broader commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Submissions

We are always looking to work with new reporters, thought-leaders and content producers.

We are interested in articles, op-eds and video pitches on the following topics:

  • Toxic chemicals
  • Plastic pollution
  • Environmental injustice
  • The petrochemical industry
  • Solution-focused stories on the above issues
For news and features:

If you want to pitch an idea to EHN, reach out to senior editor Brian Bienkowski with a detailed pitch, including why you’re the person to cover this for us and links to past work.

We pay a competitive rate for freelance writers and producers.

For opinions/commentaries:

We run opinion pieces, commentaries and analyses from scientists, community members, organization leaders and others. Articles are generally 600 – 1,200 words and written for a lay audience — not academic in tone. We use AP Style, and submissions may be edited for clarity, organization or brevity, with all proposed changes and edits run by the contributor.

We do not pay for opinion pieces.

Pitch your idea or completed article to senior editor Brian Bienkowski, including who you are and why you’re an authority on the issue.

Republishing our work

The editorial board of EHN and The Daily Climate provides a voice for science-based public policy, a healthier environment, and a reduction in environmental injustices.

The editorial board champions those principles without regard to partisanship and beholden to no individual, scientific society or political organization.

While the editorial board is an institutional voice, it is not the voice of the institution as a whole. It does not speak for the newsroom of these two publications.

The board is made up of senior directors of Environmental Health Sciences, which publishes EHN.org and DailyClimate.org:
